Eastern beauty. Görlitz. 

It is the easternmost city in Germany – and even has a sister city, Zgorzelec! The European city of Görlitz leads an attractive double life. Everyday life is always a little more colourful, different and international here, and Germany and Poland are definitely much more than mere neighbours. 

Görlitz is rural, idyllic, beautiful. 59,000 people live here, in the tri-border region of Poland, the Czech Republic and Germany, between the northern Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond Region and the southern Lusatian Mountains. Late Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque town houses stand side by side, and more than 4,000 cultural and architectural monuments compete for attention. No wonder so many people fall in love with this old city on their first visit. 

The city, almost unscathed by the Second World War, is so well preserved that it was officially named Europe's best film location of the decade – a title awarded by the European Parliament in 2017 as part of a film promotion campaign. Over 100 productions have already been shot here: "Measuring the World", "The Grand Budapest Hotel", "Inglourious Basterds", "The Captain", "The Monuments Men" – the list goes on and on. 

There are also great films at the annual Neiße Film Festival, with its three-country programme in Poland, the Czech Republic and Germany. Or do you prefer small and cosy? The sophisticated Camillo cinema, equipped with couches and a bar, seats 34, while the big blockbusters are shown at the Filmpalast theatre. Music, theatre, plus the RABRYKA as a base with its community garden, open workshop, sound lab and repair café – there is simply no room for boredom in this town.
